| STATEMENT I like to photograph with a documentary approach to my subject, yet still treating my subjects as objects. This involves discovering new visual possibilities and working with things that already exist without the temptation to change them, but to leave them as they already are. I hold a great passion in kitsch settings, homely environments, hotels, bed and breakfasts and I feel these all hold qualities of age, love and character. I am trying to create a narrative through my photographs to try and show an environment that is lived in still to this day. I feel these environments are special and rare to find, and I like to record this for my work. Working heavily in composition and use of colour are my main field. I feel that the composition can say a lot, not only about the photo, but also the atmosphere of the environment and it captures it in a more diverse way. I like to make everyday things seem special and attractive without glamorising too much, just documenting how these things still exist. My photos enable a person to question why I chose to record the most normal of objects, in such a passionate yet almost obsessive way. I am continuing to document places that still exist and finding places that still keep the same homely touches to them. The person who lives in the environment is just as important as the place itself, yet I never involve people in my work. I mainly work in digital format, yet I more than often use medium format to document things on the go also. |
